I have a question about pear trees?

Well, I didn't know it at first but it turns out I have a pear tree in my yard, but I have a couple of questions for those of you who grow pear trees. I would love to know how often I should water it. I live in Golden Colorado so its normally pretty dry here. Also, how, or rather, what is the best way to keep the fruits safe from birds, they haven't noticed them yet, but I've got a feeling they will in time.
